From Pompadours to Mullets: A History of Iconic Men’s Hairstyles

Men's hairstyles have long reflected cultural shifts, fashion trends, and personal expression. From clean cuts to rebellious looks, the evolution of men's hair tells the story of changing times and tastes.

At Mavericks at the Den, we appreciate the timeless classics as well as the bold statements that have defined men's grooming over the decades. Let's take a stylish stroll through history and explore some of the most iconic men's hairstyles. And yes, you can still get these styles at Mavericks! (If you want them. No judging here!)

The Pompadour (1950s-Present)

This style was named after Madame de Pompadour, a mistress of King Louis XV. It was reimagined as a style for men in the 1950s, and the name just fits. Popularized by Elvis Presley and James Dean, this voluminous style features slicked-back sides with height on top. It exudes confidence, rebellion, and rock-and-roll flair. The modern Pompadour is sleeker than its 1950s ancestor, often paired with a fade or undercut.

The Crew Cut (1940s-Present)

Originally a military staple, the crew cut symbolized clean-cut masculinity during World War II. With its short length and low maintenance, it became a favorite among athletes and professionals. It remains a go-to for men who prefer a sharp, fuss-free style, but it needs some maintenance to keep it looking sharp. Variations include the flattop, where the hair on top is cut to create a flat plane.

The Ducktail (1950s)

The ducktail, also known as the "DA" (short for duck's ass), was a staple of 1950s rebel style. Characterized by hair slicked back on the sides and meeting in a seam at the back, it was made popular by greasers and rock 'n' roll icons like Johnny Cash and Little Richard. Requiring precision and a fair bit of pomade, the ducktail was about making a bold, rebellious statement—a true symbol of the era's youthful defiance. It's not a common request at Mavericks, but you can occasionally spot a bit of DA on men sporting longer locks.

The Mullet (1970s-1990s, and Again Today)

"Business in the front, party in the back." The mullet may be divisive, but it has undeniably earned its place in the style hall of fame. Rock stars, athletes, and actors all sported mullets during its heyday in the '80s. Today, the mullet is making a comeback with modern twists that give it a stylish edge.

The Afro (1960s-1970s)

More than just a hairstyle, the Afro became a cultural and political statement during the Civil Rights Movement. Embraced at one time or another by icons like Diana Ross and Jimi Hendrix, the style celebrated natural hair and Black identity. It remains a powerful symbol of pride and heritage.

The Caesar Cut (1990s-Present)

Named after Julius Caesar, this close-cut style with a short horizontal fringe gained modern popularity in the '90s, thanks to celebrities like George Clooney. The Caesar cut is low-maintenance and ideal for those who want a no-fuss yet fashionable look.

The Fade (1980s-Present)

A versatile style that blends different hair lengths, the fade became popular in the 1980s within urban and hip-hop communities. Today, fades come in various styles—low, mid, high, and skin fades—and are often paired with other cuts like the Pompadour, mohawk, or buzz cut.

The Undercut (1920s, 2010s-Present)

The undercut first gained popularity in the 1920s and made a major comeback in the 2010s. With short sides and longer hair on top, it creates a bold contrast that works well with slick-backs, pompadours, and quiffs. Its versatility and edge make it a barbershop favorite today—along with the fade, the undercut may be one of our most requested styles.
