Meet Isiah Childs: Passion, Purpose, and Precision at Mavericks at the Den in Coeur d’Alene

Mavericks at the Den is proud to welcome a new face to the shop — someone who brings energy, discipline, and heart to every cut. Meet Isiah (“Zay”) Childs, one of our new barbers. Though he’s officially been at Mavericks for only a few weeks, Isiah is already making a strong impression with his work ethic, personality, and dedication to his craft.

From the Football Field to the Barber Chair

Isiah’s journey into barbering is anything but ordinary. After finishing his college football career and earning his degree from the University of Montana at the end of 2024, he thought he had his path mapped out. But a senior-year injury shifted everything.

“For the first time, I had to ask myself what life looked like outside of football,” Isiah shares.

In early 2025, he walked into his garage, picked up a pair of clippers, and decided to bet on himself. There was no blueprint. No guarantees. Just discipline, consistency, and belief. That same drive that fueled him on the field became the foundation of his barbering career.

Last April, Isiah and his wife packed up and moved to Idaho so he could attend barbering school at Paul Mitchell CDA. Since then, he’s been building something of his own, one haircut at a time.

Building a Brand Through Consistency

In January of last year, Isiah began documenting his barbering journey on social media. What started as a simple commitment to show up consistently has grown into a strong following: 11.4K on TikTok (@zayschops) and 1,300 on Instagram (@zays-chops)!

His content isn’t just about haircuts. It’s about growth, discipline, and trusting the process.

“The field taught me discipline. Barbering gave me purpose. And now I get to build something that’s mine.”

What It’s Like in Isiah’s Chair

On a daily basis, Isiah focuses on delivering clean, confident cuts while also documenting his work to share online. But for him, it’s about more than just technique.

His personal philosophy is simple but powerful: Everyone wants to look good and feel appreciated. As a barber, he believes he has a unique opportunity to help people feel seen, valued, and confident. He works to create an atmosphere where clients feel comfortable, energized, and ready to come back again.

“Not only are they getting a great cut,” he says, “but they’re going to have a great experience.”

Why Mavericks At the Den?

When asked what he loves most about working at Mavericks, Isiah doesn’t hesitate: the people and the atmosphere. He appreciates that everyone in the building genuinely cares about one another. That sense of community makes a difference, not just for the barbers, but for every client who walks through the door.

With Coeur d’Alene continuing to grow, Isiah sees Mavericks as the perfect place to connect with new clients and to build lasting relationships.

Beyond the Shop

Sports continue to influence Isiah’s life and work. As a former college athlete and current high school football coach at Lakeland High School, he builds strong connections through athletics. The lessons he learned in sports — discipline, teamwork, and perseverance — show up daily in his barbering career.

Outside of work, his favorite way to spend time is simple: with his wife. Their move to Idaho and shared commitment to this new chapter have been a huge part of his journey.
